Over 20,000 applications, 390 employers, over 12,000 job vacancies and 4,777 young people employed – this is what the Moscow Youth Employment Centre can show for its efforts. Below is an interview with director of the centre Roman Shkut.
Do you know what salary a Moscow pupil or student should expect to get? When is it an appropriate time to ask the question about the work schedule? Which photos should the job applicants never attach to their CVs? If you do not know, Director of the Centre Roman Shkut does. In his interview, Roman Shkut spoke about existing trends concerning the labour market, the temporary employment programme and interview rules.
Question: When was the centre established and why?
Roman Shkut: The centre opened in May 2016 to help young people between the ages of 14 and 30 find jobs. It is an alternative to private recruiting agencies initiated by the city. By contrast, we are socially oriented as our top priority is to meet the interests of the applicants, rather than those of the employers. In a bit more than a year, over 20,000 young people have approached us, including some 11,000 job-seekers. We have delivered on 4,777 job applications.
CV secrets and tricky questions
Question: What advice would you give to young people who are compiling a CV?
Roman Shkut:  Normally, an HR manager looks through a CV and makes a decision on whether to invite a job applicant for an interview within two or three seconds. The lack of a photo is a huge drawback; a selfie or a photo with the sea in the background is not good either. The photo has to be a decent one. You must by no means write negatively about your former employer.
You shouldn't write excessively about your life on three pages - the employer is not interested in this. You should list your skills, competencies and achievements at your previous places of work in a concise and clear manner. It is a huge advantage if you led any projects, even small ones, or you formed a team, started some project from scratch or introduced something new. Such things are always an asset.
Life after university and pool of employers
Question: What does your centre offer to qualified specialists, that is, those who have already received a higher education?

Roman Shkut:  There are a lot of job vacancies, ranging from accountants, lawyers and economists to agronomists. There is also an explosive growth of the IT sector. Salaries vary very much. If you are a programmer and have the skills of a coder - that is, sort of a 'universal soldier' - many companies are ready to hire you with a salary starting from 100,000 roubles, much higher than average. But in most cases, a graduate's idea that he/she can earn 70-80,000 roubles right upon graduation is an illusion. An employer is ready to pay a person with no previous work experience 25-30,000 roubles. After one year of work, if he/she has done well, they can think of a higher salary of 40-50,000 roubles.
