A. For many years, it has been a tradition in many parts of the world to hold a fair during
public holidays. During religious festivals, there was a carnival atmosphere in many towns as
fairgrounds appeared for a few days for people just to have fun. But slowly these fairs have been
replaced by more permanent sites, where people can have fun all the year round.
B. Opened in 1955, Disneyland in California is regarded by many as the original fun park.
Visitors were greeted by characters from various Disney films and the procession of Mickey
Mouse and his friends is still a beautiful sight for people of all ages.
C. Nowadays, such parks can be found all over the world: indeed, it is becoming hard to
avoid them. Special events, such as unforgettable firework displays, are organised in order to
bring in the crowds. Creating a theme park involves a lot of money and the managers cannot
afford to relax.
D. A trip to a fun park is not complete without something to really scare you. A roller coaster
is nothing special these days. For real thrills, there’s ‘Oblivion’, at Alton Towers in England,
which takes you headfirst into a dark hole filled with smoke. It doesn’t last long, but three
minutes of nightmare is enough.
E. For people who don’t like frightening rides there are plenty of other ways to spend the
time. At the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas, there is a glass copy of the tomb of Tutankhamun. There
are shops and restaurants and imitation temples, but-best of all there is the possibility of a boat
trip down the Nile.
