THE CITY OF LONDON London is the capital of Great Britain. It is its political and business centre. The heart of London is the City, it is the oldest part of London. Many people work in the City but very few live there. There are a lot of banks and offices there too. You can visit some places of interest in the City and near it. One of them is the Tower of London. William the Conqueror built it in the 11th century. The Tower used to be a fortress, a palace, a prison, an observatory and even the King's Zoo. Now it is the museum. Only the White Tower has remained from those times. You can see a lot of interesting things in the halls of the White Tower, including the Crown Jewels. Tourists can also see black rayens. Special people look after them as the British believe that London will be rich and powerful while ravens live there. The Tower is guarded by yeoman warders or “Beefeaters” in medieval clothes.

One of the Greatest English churches, St. Paul's Cathedral, is not far from the Tower of London. The famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17th century after the Great Fire of London. It took him 35 years to construct it. In one of its towers there is one of the largest bells in the world. It's also famous for its 'whispering gallery".

The centre of London is Trafalgar Square. In the middle of the square stands a tall column. It is a monument to Admiral Nelson, whose fleet defeated the Spanish Armada in the battle at Trafalgar. Four bronze lions look at the square from the monument. There are two beautiful fountains in front of a nice building with tall columns, which is the National Gallery. The National Gallery is one of the best picture galleries in the world and contains a great collection of paintings.​
