than underground laying of polyethylene pipes for several reasons: extra construction materials are required for making supports and their footing, oil painting of pipes is needed, and in addition the total length of above-the-ground laying is practically always bigger because of necessity to arrange road crossings. The cost of digging narrow trenches for polyethylene gas pipelines is considerably less and the external view of the settlement can be maintained. Besides, if need be, the dug up soil can be used for vegetable gardens with appropriate fertilizing.
Cost of maintenance. First of all, it should be noted that the service life of a polyethylene pipelines is 10 years more than that of the steel one. The service term of electric protection facilities is 2-3 times less than that of the steel gas pipeline being protected. And if in the expenses are practically equal in future they grow for the steel gas pipelines because it is necessary to check the condition of insulation, to remove damaged sections and restore the electric protection system.
