Task 2. Reading. Buses in America The United States has developed an enormous modern transportation system, an extensive network of roads and highways. Public, state supported mass transportation systems — busses, commuter trains, street cars, subways – make sense for those parts of the US that are densely inhabited.
The most extensive and one of the least expensive means of transportation in America is the bus. Both city traffic and inter-city transportation are largely provided by bus companies – public and private.
Inter-city and suburban bus companies operate between some15, 000 cities, towns and villages. The two largest inter-city state supported bus companies, Greyhound Lines and Trailways, together operate about 7,000 buses and transport both passengers and goods. America's inter-city buses transport more than 350 million passengers every year, more than Amtrak and all airlines combined. This cheap way to cover long distances in the US is used by many American and foreign travellers.
Of course, cars take you where you want to go and when you want to go especially considering relatively low prices for gas. But during the rush hour, a trip from San- Francisco to Oakland, for example, takes about 45 minutes by car, and only 9 by the inter-city transit bus system. Construction of the roads was and is very expensive. Following the system established in Europe, private companies after building the road started to collect tolls from those who used it. Some toll roads still exist today, especially in the East.
