а)Sydney has a population of 4,400,000 It is Australia’s largest and oldest city, and it is built on hills surrounding Sydney Harbour – an inlet of the Tasman Sea on Australia's south-east coast. The site of the first British colony in Australia, Sydney was established in 1788 at Sydney Cove by Arthur Phillip.
б)Sydney wasn’t planned from the start as many later Australian cities were. The City of Sydney itself covers a fairly small area comprising the central business district and its neighbouring inner-city suburbs. But it is a very modern city, with the most Australian energy and style.
в)Sydney has a temperate climate with warm summers and cool winters, and rainfall spread throughout the year. The warmest month is January. There are some of the best beaches in the world, notably Bondi Beach and Manly.
г)Sydney's most famous beach attracts large numbers of tourists to Bondi throughout the year with many Irish and British tourists spending Christmas Day there. Bondi Beach features many popular cafes, restaurants and hotels, some with spectacular views of the beach and surrounding headlands. The beach itself is approximately one kilometre long.
д)Sydney is known for its beaches and, with its warm climate, attracts people to the beaches almost all year round. Tourism forms an important part of the city's economy. Sydney has a wide variety of attractions.
е)The natural harbour of Sydney is known for its spectacular natural beauty, and in particular as the location of the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Sydney Opera House is one of the most distinctive and famous 20th century buildings, and one of the most famous performing arts venues in the world. Designed in the 1950s by a young Danish architect Joern Utzon, it is supposed to look like sails in the wind. It took 16 years to build.
Ж)Sydney is very exciting, diverse and multicultural. It boasts a dynamic scene of musical, theatrical, visual and other artistic activity. Sydney hosts many different festivals and some of Australia's largest social and cultural events. These include the Sydney Festival, Australia's largest arts festival which is a celebration involving both indoor and free outdoor performances throughout January. It is also one of the world's top fashion cities.
