Detective Conan Doyle once arrived in Paris after spending a summer month in the south of France. He had admired the nature, the climate and cuisine, but there had been too many people there who had recognized him and asked many boring questions about his characters. Thus, being in Paris he presumed he would be unnoticed in a great city and would spend a restlul evening and night before he continued his trip to England. There was a long row of cabs outside the gate of the railway station. Conan Doyle got into the first cab and ordered the young driver to take him to one of the finest hotels. As soon as he uttered some words in French he guessed he could see the drivers eyes twinkle, but he did not attach importance to it The driver was evidently of a taciturn disposition which suited Conan Doyle perfectly well. It was only near the entrance to the hotel after Conan Doyle had paid him when he said deliberately, Thank you, Sir Conan Doyle'. The detective was taken aback. He had expected to travel incognito and was so delighted to be left alone, and now the lirst cab driver could see his identity. It's improbable! How do you know I am?" he asked the driver in the greatest surprise, "You see, sir, I have always been in a habit of noticing minor things. I read in the newspaper that you were expected in Paris after your vacation in the south of the country. The train you've arrived on came from the south of France. I could tell from the clothes, especially your hat, and from the strange way you pronounce French words that you were English. These facts helped me to iderntify you as Sir Conan Doyle". Wonderful! Conan Doyle cried. "You have analysed the facts logically and correctly. You are really very subtle in taking in facts and events and deducing the conelusion, It's a pity you are not a detective! But why haven't you told me earlier that you recognized me? We have been travelling together for about half' an hour already!" You see, sir, I am not accustomed to jumping into conclusions.
