1) The more we are together, the more I love you. 2) I looked at what seemed to be just a scrap of paper. 3) At last what we had been waiting for happened. 4) However friendly she might seem one day, the next she would be cold, official and detached. 5) No sooner had she seen me approaching, than she slammed the door in my face. 6) Keep on doing your work unless instructed otherwise.
5. Определите, является подчинение параллельным («однородным» или «разнородным») или последовательным в следующих сложноподчиненных предложениях; укажите «глубину подчинительной перспективы» в каждом предложении:
1) He is a man who can easily deceive and whom you cannot rely on. 2) The girl who held out the flowers was in a marvelous velvet dress, which was decorated with lace and braid. 3) I was at a loss why they refused to sign the document, which had been discussed at the meeting we had had three weeks before.
7. Проанализируйте типы коннекторов и отношений между частями (клаузами) следующих сложносочиненных предложений:
1) Roses are red and violets are blue and sugar is sweet and so are you. 2) There’s something awfully consoling about you, you make things so simple. 3) The item you requested is no longer available and therefore we are returning your cheque. 4) He had no children or near relations to be spared, so he did not fear publicity. 5) Either he had recovered from his panic of the night, or he pretended to have. 6) A shadow of grin showed itself on the man’s lips, however he remained silent. 7) It was late and besides he was too tired to stay. 8) She knocked on the door and then she came in. 9) It has some limitations, but then what do you expect form a $100 computer? 10) He can’t be ill, or he wouldn’t have come. 11) Did you do it or didn’t you? 12) The book must be here, or else you’ve lost it. 13) The soup was cold, but otherwise the meal was excellent. 14) You’d better go now; otherwise you’ll miss your train.
8. Преобразуйте следующие сложносочиненные предложения в синонимичные сложноподчиненные предложения, если возможно; прокомментируйте, какие отношения выражаются в сложносочиненных предложениях, и какая дополнительная семантика появляется в сложноподчиненных трансформах:
например: He decided to leave and he put on his coat. - He put on his coat because he decided to leave; отношения между событиями соединительные и результативные.
1) Everything you just told us might be strictly the truth, yet you might not be telling us the truth. 2) She was only beginning to live, so trouble could not get her down. 3) An hour passed, than another, still she did not leave. 4) The safe was more for show than for use, she kept nothing in it. 5) He demanded that we should agree to all his conditions, or otherwise he would not take part in it at all. 6) She might have invited us to sit, but she didn’t.
