Past Tense – Valentine’s Day Put the verbs in the past tense, then answer the questions below.

The Story of St. Valentine

The Roman Emperor Claudius II (is) fighting may wars and he (want) to build a strong army. He was having trouble finding enough men to join the army because the men wanted to be home with their wives and children. So Emperor Claudius II (decide) to cancel all marriages. No one in Rome was allowed to get married.

A priest named Valentine did not agree with the Emperor. He (believe) people should get married. He thought that if people were not married, they would be tempted by sin. So he secretly and illegally (marry) couples anyway. He performed the weddings in secret places so the Roman soldiers wouldn’t find out. But they did find out, and they (arrest) him and brought him to the Emperor. The Emperor told Valentine to reject his beliefs and stop being a Christian, but he (refuse). He was sent to prison.

While he was in prison, he (send) letters out to his friends and asked them to pray for him. He always signed the letters “Remember your Valentine.”

Valentine was killed on the 14th or the 24th of February in the year 269 or 270. We celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th in honor of St. Valentine.
