Text 1. THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF PRISONS Persons, who are convicted of crimes under the federal law, are to serve their sentences in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a branch of the U.S. Department of Justice. The Bureau was created by the U.S. Congress in 1930 to bring under integrated control the separate federal prisons that had existed before that time. Currently, 90 prisons confine federal offenders in a system ranging from minimum-security prison camps to high-security penitentiaries. Specialized facilities such as detention and medical centers handle inmates of all security levels.
Headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Prisons are situated in Washington, D.C. The agency is divided into six geographic regions. Each region is headed by a Regional Director who should supervise prisons and community corrections centers; usually 2-3 associate wardens may help him to exercise his duties.
A typical federal inmate is likely to be a white male in his mid-thirties. More than 60 percent of the inmates have been convicted of drug trafficking, about 10, 5 percent of robbery and a wide range of offences from illegal firearms possession to extortion. About 7, 2 percent are women, 25 percent are non-USA citizens.
The Bureau of Prisons continuously provides programs and strategies to return offenders to society as productive law-abiding citizens.
