In 12 episodes, everyday scenes from the lives of the working-class Wilkins family were shown to the nation. Some television managers were not sure that it would be a success as it seemed boring to them. But The Family was immediately a huge hit. That was the beginning of today's reality TV, which attracts millions of viewers.
In the new millennium reality TV programmes have become more personal and cruel or humiliating. Fat Club, for example, followed the ups and downs of eight overweight people who were trying to lose weight at a remote health club. With reality TV also came interactive TV, starting with the mother of them all, Big Brother, in which viewers decide each week by vote who stays and who goes. A lot of such shows quickly appeared all over the world. In some of them groups of famous people have to survive for two weeks in the jungle together. During their stay on the island they perform different tasks. Some of the tasks are extremely unpleasant or even dangerous. Anyhow, this fact doesn't stop celebrities from taking part in such shows. Their appearance on the TV screen helps them with their careers, makes them more popular with the public.
