On saturday, january 10, 1914, two men 1 entered) john g. morrison’s store. the grocery owner and his two sons 2 were closing the shop for the night. as soon as the men 3 had entered, one of them cried, “we’ve got you now! ” and shot at the elder morrison. he 4 was shot twice and died that night. it 5 is believed that he 6 was killed by two bandits who 7 had twice in the past ten years made attempts 8 to rob him. mrs. morrison 9 told the police that her husband 10 had spoken to her of two men in their district whom he believed to be his enemies, 11 had given their names and said: ”if anything 12 happens to me you 13 may have to look them up”. though several people 14 had been arrested no attempt was made to hide the two men whom morrison 15 had told his wife 16 to be his enemies. the event which 17 took place that night had also led to the arrest of joe hill. however, all the men who 18 were arrested in the days immediately following the murder were later set free, except one – joe hill.joe hill   19 was a marked man.   a campaign against him   20 was on from the moment he   21 was arrested. the state authorities decided that the arrest of joe hill would end the active strike movement in that part of the country. in the very day of his arrest, the police 22 pronounced their verdict. the police now 23 believe that hill is guilty… the police and the press 24 had found joe hill guilty before the trial. on the morning of november 19, 1915, joe hill sat in a chair before the firing squad. five men with guns 25 were standing waiting for their orders to shoot.
