Paper seems to be the weakest material. But if we glue a lot of sheets of paper together, we get a strong block. Is it stronger than wood? Probably not. But still you can work with paper blocks with the same sculpturing tools that you use for stone. The strongest material is stone. But it's also harder to work with stone and shape it. Wood is softer than stone, but you still need to carve it. Carving needs efforts. Wooden sculptures have very pleasant texture, but they are less resistant to water and weather conditions. Clay is more resistant. Of course, after you make ceramics out of it. At first, clay is very soft and you can do what you want with it. Clay gets harder when it dries, but to make it stronger, you need to fire it in the kiln*. How do usually sculptors choose materials? It depends on different factors. But first of all, sculptors choose the material that they like the most. They prefer materials that have the most pleasant touch for them.
