A Mary Kingsley was born in 1862 in London, the daughter of a doctor, and lived at a time when young ladies were expected to be pretty, smile, and marry the richest man they could. Her brother Charley studied Law at Cambridge, enabling Mary to meet and make friends with a group of academics. This, in addition to having access to her father’s extensive library, made Mary a remarkably well-educated woman. B When Mary was 30, her parents died and with the large amount of money they left her, Mary was able to leave England and travel. She went to Africa. At a time when women had no rights, Mary’s journey was incredible. The diaries she wrote during her trip were turned into a book called Travels in West Africa , a detailed and fascinating account of previously unknown worlds. She also had a wonderful sense of humour. Mary’s attitude was, if you want to experience something new you’ll need to get out into the world and find it. C She said that if she died, she wanted to be buried at sea. In 1900, while working at a hospital in Cape Town, she became ill with typhoid fever and died. Although she died very young – and got her wish to be buried at sea– Mary made a huge impact on the way Western European society of that time saw Africa and Africans. If you think something is wrong in the world, you’ll need to speak up if you want to make a difference. Mary’s life shows that you can follow your dreams to the farthest corners of the world. If you want to be extraordinary, you’ll need to have her attitude. I. Read the text.
