Painting english artist alma-tadema sir lawrence is dedicated to the heliogabalus, who on his feast, showered the guests with flowers, and those suffocated by their aromas.  alma-tadema sir lawrence (1836-1912) was an english artist, author 408 of paintings, mostly devoted to antiquity.  alma-tadema was born in the netherlands, studied at the royal academy in antwerp. first wrote painting with the ancient story in 1858. he carefully studied and sketched the museum exhibits in the british museum and the louvre, later these drawings were filled with his paintings, reproduced the smallest details. he carefully studied the artifacts of the roman empire in the museums of italy, in particular, pompeii.  the theme of the painting "the roses of heliogabalus" taken from the "authors' biographies augustów" — roman historiographical literature of the monument. according to legend, heliogabal — twenty-third roman emperor in one of their feasts showered the guests in so many colours that they choked on the scent. the first thing that catches the eye pink mass, in which you view somebody's head and body. then the look goes to the company, which is located on the benches around the table on an elevated and watching what is happening: who are curious, who care, who with malice. the visual frame of the picture — the column on the left and the right, in the background — blue sky and the silhouette of the mountains. on the left is an incense burner, it is played by a flutist. closer to the viewer shows the cloth awning that had fallen rose petals. they are so numerous that they almost closed those at the bottom. who are these people? it is difficult, if not impossible, to determine where and who is on the canvas. comes to the aid response, written by frederick farrar — contemporary alma-tadema, theologian, writer, chaplain at the court of queen victoria.  of heliogabal lived a short life, from 203 to 222 bc he was only fourteen years old when he became emperor, and his throne was erected maesa — grandmother on his mother. during his reign he managed to change five wives, and at the same time to destroy the roman religious traditions and sexual taboos cancel. his adventures and anger aroused universal dislike, in the end overthrew him.
