the most famous federal government agency in the united states is the federal bureau of investigation (the f.b.i.) with the headquarters in washington, d.c. the fbi is headed by a director who is appointed by the president and confirmed by the senate. the current director, robert s. mueller, iii, became director on september 4, 2001.
fbi headquarters is organized into five mainbranches: national security, criminal investigations, law enforcement services, office of the chief information officer, and administration. each branch is composed of multiple divisions. the fbi laboratory is one of the largest and most comprehensive crime laboratories in the world.
the special agents and professional staff personnel who work at headquarters direct, organize, and coordinate fbi activities around the world.
