Заголовки прочитайте тексты и установите соответствие между текстами a-g и заголовками 1-8. запишите свои ответы в таблицу. используйте каждую цифру только один раз. в есть один лишний заголовок. 1. modern changes 2. new defences needed 3. helping and threatening life 4. ancient data 5. protecting small islands 6. worldwide effects 7. differing opinions 8. populations living at sea level a. water is possibly the most important thing for life on planet earth. but even though we cannot survive without water, it also creates many problems, and the global rise in sea levels is a danger to millions of people. about 70% of the earth is covered by water and many cities are built close to coastal areas. b. although sea levels are rising at an increasing rate, there is no clear agreement as to what is causing it. many scientists believe that global warming, caused by human activity, has contributed to it. others argue that it is the result of natural climate change and the earth often goes through patterns of rising and falling sea levels. c. whatever causes rising sea levels, the signs are clear. it appears that sea levels began to rise in the 19th century and these increases have more than doubled in the 20th century. there is plenty of evidence for these changes, from scientific sources such as geological data and record keeping. d. there is plenty of evidence for dramatic changes in sea levels in the past. for instance, geological data shows that in the last ice age, 18,000 years ago, sea levels were around 120 metres lower than they are today. further back in the past, there is evidence that sea levels were higher. so fluctuations in sea levels have occurred at various points in history. e. the fact that rising sea levels may be a natural phenomenon won t be much consolation to people living in coastal areas facing the dangers of flooding. large cities such as london and new york already use flood barriers. however, these cities will need much greater flood defences in the future. the netherlands, a country with 25% of its land below sea level, will also need to increase its sea defences. f. it is estimated that many islands could become uninhabitable. even quite small rises in sea level can have a devastating effect on communities. flooding can cause destruction of property and crops, soil erosion and poor quality drinking water. worldwide, about 634 million people live in coastal areas and two thirds of the worlds largest major cities are in low-lying areas. g. people who don't live close to coastal areas would be seriously affected by the destruction of coastal communities. firstly, it would mean that large numbers of climate refugees would have to move to higher ground. the damage to agriculture and fresh water supplies could result in widespread famine. all in all, rising sea levels could be very serious for the entire population of the world.
