Almaty is the largest city of kazakhstan, located in the south-east of the republic of kazakhstan, foothills of zailiyskiy alatau; the city's population is about 1.5 million inhabitants. though almaty is not the capital of the republic, the city remains financial, economic and cultural center of central asia.it focused a large number of business centers, theaters, museums, art galleries, exhibition halls and countless modern entertainment complexes (cinemas, night clubs, parks, restaurants, cafes and much more) .almaty was the capital of kazakhstan from 1929 to 1997 in accordance with the presidential decree "on declaring the capital of the republic astana", almaty was given the status of city of republican significance and the southern capital of the republic, the largest financial, scientific and cultural center. the residence of the head of state and the government remained in the city.industry food and light industry are a prevailing share in the city's economy and account for more than 70% of industrial enterprises. the heavy industry of almaty presented by several engineering and repair factories.almaty has always been considered a city of gardens, surrounded by the magnificent tian shan spruces. many centuries the snowy peaks of the mighty zailiyskogo alatau soaring to the sky, creating the impression of majestic protection. fragrance gardens, emerald tops known alatau spruce and poplars, swift mountain currents, an abundance of bustling markets, reviving freshness city fountains, glitter of the palaces and squares make an unforgettable impression on the guests of the southern capital – almaty.residents and guests of the southern capital can visit 5 stadiums, race track, skating rink medeo located at 1,700 metres above sea level. here was established more than a hundred world records. medeo is one of the favorite places of the weekend. ice stadium holds 32,000 spectators. nearby is a field for training athletes and equipped winter swimming pool.picturesque mountains are the hallmark of almaty. you will be able to enjoy them up by cable car to the highest point of the city, kok-tobe ("blue mountain") , located at an altitude of 1,130 meters above sea level. from this summit offers an amazing view of the mountains and the city. it is especially beautiful at night when the city is illuminated with colored lights.

The olympic games have a very long history. they began in 777 bc in greece and took place every four years for nearly twelve centuries at olimpia. they included many different kinds of sports: running, boxing, wrestling, etc. all the cities in greece sent their best athletes to olimpia to compete in the games. for the period of the games all the wars stopped. so the olympic games became the symbol of peace and friendship.  in 394 ad the games were abolished and were not renewed until many centuries later.  in 1894, a frenchman, baron pierre de coubertin, addressed all the sports governing bodies and pointed out the significance of sports and its educational value.  two years later the first modern olympic games took place. of course, the competitions were held in greece to symbolize the continuation of the centuries-old tradition.
