Have you noticed that in everyday life we often use words that contain our assessment of the moral qualities of a person: "kind", "evil", "good", "honest", "selfish", "empathetic", "unfair " etc. These words have become, as it were, a bargaining chip for communication, for some reason displacing such a capacious word as "decent" from our everyday vocabulary.

In the "Dictionary of the Russian Language" by SI Ozhegov, "decency" is interpreted as "honesty, incapacity for an antimoral, low antisocial act." This formulation allows us to assert that the question of the degree of decency of a person can be solved not by simply listing one or another of his moral traits, but by identifying the most significant ones that determine all other qualities of his personality.

It is well known that it is impossible to live in society and be free from it, that is, the essence and content of a person's personality are determined by the entire set of social relations characteristic of a given society. Consequently, the main indicator of a person's morality is the combination of personal and public interests in her, her active life position. Nothing elevates a person more than a conscious attitude to social duty, when the unity of word and deed becomes the daily norm of behavior.

It is this personality quality, in my opinion, that serves as the initial norm for determining the decency of a person.

Decency as a reflection of a person's moral position in any, sometimes conflict situations, manifests itself in a fair and honest choice of a solution by him in accordance with the consciousness of his responsibility to society, a system of views on ideals, duty, honesty, conscience, adherence to principles, good and evil, the meaning of life.

I quite consciously and with full confidence in my righteousness put the responsibility of a person for everything that comes from him and what happens next to him, in the first place among the components of the concept of "decency".

Responsibility at the present stage of social development acquires not only deep social, but also moral meaning. For responsibility as a character trait, as the most important stimulus for human activity, depends primarily on him. life, moral position, as well as on the level of his education and culture. Responsibility and duty are integral elements of decency, because it is the consciousness of responsibility and duty that obliges a person to take his actions and deeds seriously and thoughtfully. In this regard, I recall the letter of the teacher Anna M., who, asserting one thing in literary examples, in life, without thinking about the consequences of her actions, shows inconsistency, irresponsibility, in other words, dishonesty. Anna M. writes that she "must", mind you - must, cover up the hooligan act in the classroom, only so as not to make it public in the district, and, therefore, to protect the honor of the school. Apparently, Anna M. did not quite clearly understand for herself what the “honor of the school” and her own honor of the class teacher are. It seems that the honor and authority of the teacher will suffer much more not because a hooligan act was committed in the classroom, but because this act is hidden. After all, it is important for a teacher who molds children's souls not to forget for a moment the moral consequences that this concealment will have for schoolchildren. In vain does she try to console herself that the opinion of her students about her has not changed. Their remoteness is evidence of the moral damage that the teacher inflicted on her students. And therefore, to the question of Anna M. "How to live further, what to think about yourself?" I want to answer: you have to be a decent person, and not seem like that, which means that you have to act and behave in accordance with a conscious public duty.
